WEEE & RoHS

It is estimated that over 200 million electrical and electronic items put onto the market every year. In terms of Municipal waste, it accounts for around 4% and is growing at a very high rate every year.

From July 1st 2006, all electrical and electronic equipment should comply with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive that forces manufacturers to ensure a number of hazardous substances; lead, cadmium and mercury for example, are not used in the manufacture of electrical equipment and therefore cannot end up in a landfill with the potential to pollute the environment.

The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive became law in the UK on January 2nd 2007 and regulations are being gradually introduced over the next six months. The directives were put in place to reduce the growing amount of electrical waste produced by UK households and Businesses every year.

However, the WEEE directives do not just cover the disposal of electrical equipment; all new items should reduce the impact of waste built into their design and reduce greenhouse emissions in their manufacture.
